PLEASE SEND US YOUR WILDLIFE RECORDS!

Why send us wildlife records?

Many species such as bats and badgers are legally protected, and many more including the red squirrel and water vole may be disappearing from large parts of Fife. If we don’t know where they are then then we can’t help protect them!

So far, the public has helped Fife Nature gather approx. 500,000 records which we in turn have used to help protect Fife's wildlife by working with all those with an interest in wildlife conservation e.g:

- Local government planners.

- Charities.

- Developers.

- Acedemics.

- The general public.

Everyone in Fife can play an important role in helping protect species and habitats by sending us wildlife records. By submitting details of wildlife you've seen, you can directly contribute to the protection of wildlife by informing development applications and biodiversity projects etc, and you'll also help shape national decision making and policy on wildlife conservation.

How do I record wildlife?

Anyone living in, or visiting Fife can record what they see and submit their records to Fife Nature. Even if a species seems common, it may very well be under-recorded. All records are valuable. All you need is a pen and paper to note the following:

- What you saw.

- Where you saw it.

- When you saw it.

- Your contact details.

The 'Wildlife Recording Form' attached below can help you jot down what you see outside. If you have access to a computer, you can then put the records into 'Species Recorder' or the ‘Excel Wildlife Recording Form’ attached below and e-mail them to Fife Nature. Species Recorder is a tool developed by Fife Nature to make record submission easy by selecting various options from drop-down lists. If you would like to receive a copy of Species Recorder please send an e-mail request to simon.scott@fife.gov.uk The Excel Wildlife Recording Form is a simple table that records can be typed into.  Full instruction on the use of Species Recorder are below. Notes on using the Excel Wildlife Recording Form are included with it. If you don't have access to e-mail, please post your original paper records. All records in any format are very valuable in helping protect Fife's wildlife. There is also a handy link below for finding grid references. Simply type any Fife grid reference, place name, or postcode into the little blue box on the right of the 'Grab a Grid Reference' page (linked below). On pressing 'Go' the map will show you the general area searched for, you can then drag the marker on the map to get a detailed grid reference. The grid reference (with accuracy of your choice) will be displayed above the little blue box.
